Section 2: Miantianping Pavilion to Xiaoyoukeng Visitor Center

The Formosan gum belongs to the Hamamelidaceae family. This is an endemic Taiwan species, a descendant of an ancient species of the Americas and Asia. These are only five related species left in the world. Each fruit contains many seeds, which have long been used in Chinese medicine. The fruit tenaciously protects the seeds. Old Formosan gums are a landscape feature in this trail section. Henry David Thoreau wrote a book titled Faith in a Seed; we also see the will and resilience of the Formosan gum and its fruits, and how it fulfills its lifecycle.
